Superstition, Speculation, and Stigma
I get it. Hypnosis comes with a bit of a media mystique. Depending on the movies you’ve watched or books you’ve read, you may have run into some very outlandish claims.
And to be fair, the uncanny wonder that can be part of hypnosis can lead to a lot of wild conjecture.
Hypnosis simply makes visible something that’s always true, for everyone, every day. We all have an unconscious mind. No matter how dedicated the meditator, or mystic, sage, or martial artist, there are always processes – even in their minds and bodies – that they can neither consciously access nor control.
That’s just how things work.
Your unconscious mind and the body regulate most of what happens and what you perceive – while the conscious mind gets fixated, buzzing around the same handful of items loaded in your ready memory or current attention.
If you’re like most folks, you have so many demands on your time that not one of those things gets the proper time and focus it deserves – and would get – in a slower, more perfect world.
But the neurological truth is that most everything is unconscious. And it’s not just because your conscious mind is busy. It’s because your conscious mind doesn’t have access to them – heart rate, digestion, circulation, hormone balance, memory, and mood, for example.
But there’s an even more profound truth involved.
The unconscious mind is actually your primary system. It receives and processes all the external information first – before giving it to your conscious mind.
That’s an uncanny and unsettling idea because we all go through life with our identity firmly seated inside and identified with our conscious understanding of the world.
But just as the split-brain studies showed that the left and right brains are two whole, functional, and different entities sitting next to each other in the same skull, that’s not the only division in your mind. Your prefrontal cortex, associated with personality, is where you do your complex planning.
That is the tricky part – you see yourself only from the standpoint of your conscious mind. And that makes sense. The conscious mind, by definition, is the part of the mind you typically think about.
But that’s only scratching the surface.
Frankly, your conscious mind can keep track of only a few things at a time. Perhaps you’ve had a tense conversation or a dangerous situation. You thought you were present “in the moment,” but after you got safely clear of it, you realized that some other sketchy thing was happening. You clearly remember it, but you didn’t actually notice in the moment.
If so, that was your unconscious mind demonstrating its powers of awareness.
The Unsung Hero of Your Consciousness
Grow up as the ignored sibling, watching everyone give attention to others and taking you totally for granted?
Work in an office where you devote the long hours and all the praise goes elsewhere, but all the complaints go to you?
Suffered a relationship where you spent all your energy to keep things going, but your partner never recognized you or even dared to complain about your efforts?
If any of that has happened to you, then you might have an idea of what it’s like to be an unconscious mind.
It’s a thankless – but vital – job.
The unconscious mind constantly labors thanklessly in the background keeping everything working. It keeps you alive and breathing.
Not surprising, it helps manage digestion (a task that requires a gut-brain on its own) and only ever hears complaints – even when everything works perfectly.
Doing so much of the busy work of a brain, the unconscious mind recognizes objects and fetches memories – and stitches them together.
The point is your unconscious mind is working for you all the time. In fact, if something isn’t actually “hard to do,” your unconscious mind is probably carrying most of the load.
How dare you!
You wouldn’t dream of ignoring a family member who was working 24/7 to keep your house in order and your business running.
Likewise, it’s disrespectful to treat your unconscious mind like cheap furniture that you don’t even think about while constantly setting more weight on top of it.
This is where hypnosis comes in.
Hypnosis improves your communication – and ultimately your relationship – with your unconscious mind.
The hypnosis skill set is about harmonizing the needs and goals of the waking mind with the needs of the unconscious.
The tremendous power of hypnosis comes from recognizing an almost universally ignored fact – that the rest of you is an important player in this game, too.
Winning the Three-Legged Race
A classic staple of the youth camps and family reunions alike because it’s hard to beat it for slapstick comedy gold, the three-legged race can serve as a metaphor for your life. The quality of your life and the success you see all depend on how well you and your partner learn to cooperate.
And most complicated tasks – like managing your health, job, business, or external relationships – are often like running that same race but through a maze. And each of you is looking at a different map.
Think how much more lost and confused you’d feel if you didn’t realize what you were doing and couldn’t understand why you kept losing your balance and tripping up all the time.
Now, consider how much better you’re likely to perform when you can share the plan with your unconscious race buddy.
Hypnosis doesn’t hurt!
In fact, it can actually help manage pain.
And while there are many styles, schools, and techniques, my typical method often feels like alternating between a really good conversation and a little bit of daydreaming.
You won’t be completely “zonked out” – that’s probably counterproductive. Rather, you’ll probably experience it as a pleasant – perhaps very relaxing – time.
The entire process will be interactive to get the lasting, efficient results we want. You’ll be speaking to me throughout the experience and will probably remember everything I’ve said.
Conquer your issues by harnessing the full power of your mind.
